New AMA Gas Safety Variance: 2013

Hi Everyone,

As you are all aware Alberta Municipal Affairs has been gearing up to release newest version of the guidelines replacing the old Gas Safety Variance (VAR-GAS-05-05[REV3]) expires June 30, 2013. Yesterday I received and email from Alberta Municipal Affairs with the new guideline. Alberta Municipal Affairs has issued a new variance titled VAR-GAS-01-13 (see attached PDF). This is essentially an updated version of the expiring variance VAR-GAS-05-05[REV3], however this version (VAR-GAS-01-13) offers a much clearer explanation of the requirements by the manufacturer, installer and end user. It also attempts to clear up some of the common misconceptions and “grey” areas that were the cause of some debate in the expiring version. I have taken the time to go through and highlight some of the relevant changes that the new version of the variance puts forth.

Here are some of the important changes made to the new variance:

1)  Section 7: “Effective on July 1, 2013, all certified and inspected (in accordance with the variance) gas-fired appliance installations must have a valid gas permit as identified by the permit regulation (AR 204/2007)”

2) Section 5: “As a minimum the following documentation shall be provided…. Commissioning/combustion report with equipment/permissive set-points and stack readings at maximum fire”

3) Section 5: “ensure that the components, wiring and installation are suitable for the electrical area classification as defined in the Canadian Electrical Code CSA 22.1 Part 1 Section 18, and the Alberta Code for Electrical Installation at Oil and Gas Facilities current Edition”

These are are the links to the AMA page that the variance is posted to, I highly suggest that you read them. It is in your best interest as a manufacturer, producer or end user to get the facts straight from the AMA documents:
